VOLUNTEERS are needed to help elderly people get out and about in the community.

Braintree Council is appealing for would-be volunteers in the Witham area to consider signing up to help with its community transport scheme.

The community transport scheme provides affordable transport for elderly people, those with restricted mobility and those with a disability who struggle to use public transport.

Volunteers are needed to drive their own cars or council minibuses to take residents to places like day centres and support groups, shopping, to the doctors or hospital and the like.

Peter Tattersley, councillor responsible for health and communities, said: “If you are retired or simply have time on your hands we would love to hear from you.

"We’ve a great team of volunteer drivers who are patient, willing to help and enjoy giving something back into the community and we’re keen to hear from you wherever you live in the district but particularly Witham. If you’d like to find out more please contact our community transport team.”

Out of pocket expenses are reimbursed and no additional insurance is needed.

Frankie Ricci, deputy responsible for health and communities, said: “Volunteering can enhance your CV if you are young or if you are retired it can help you create new social ties and a sense of wellbeing. "You can volunteer as much or as little as you like to suit your own lifestyle."
