A RAIL passenger has blasted Greater Anglia’s ‘awful’ communication after being stuck at Witham Station for more than two hours.

Administrator Wendy Barker was on her way home from Colchester to Braintree on Friday evening when a train fault between Chelmsford and Shenfield caused chaos across the whole network.

Ms Barker said: “I was waiting at Witham station for the 18.10pm train to Braintree which obviously got cancelled.

“At around 6.50pm six trains all on the way up to London went past us within a minute of each other and we could not understand why that was happening.

“No trains were running to Colchester or Braintree. They could have turned one of those trains around and gone in the other direction.

“They then cancelled the 7.01pm to Braintree. It got to about 7.30pm and they were telling us the next train may not run at 8.38pm.”

Eventually Ms Barker gave up and paid out of her own pocket to get a taxi home along with dozens of other commuters.

She said: “It was Friday night and you have worked all day and you just want to get home. You are thinking about your dinner and how tired you are.

“The whole time we were not given regular updates as much as we should have been and everyone was congregating around the customer services area demanding a response.

“The communication was awful, all we kept on hearing was that the information was coming from above and they could not run buses.

“It seems a shame that a lot of passengers get fed up and put up with it. We pay for a service.”

A Greater Anglia spokesperson said: “We apologise to passengers who were delayed on Friday evening. We would encourage Ms Barker to contact us directly so we can address her concerns.

“Anyone who has been affected may be entitled to claim delay repay compensation at http://bit.ly/2hWtSNP.”
