A REFURBISHED and rebranded Indian takeaway is opening on Braintree High Street.

The Ruby, opened within the former premises of Bengal Spice, in Braintree High Street, today.

Owner Hamid Uddin, has worked in the restaurant trade for the past 25 years and also owns Curry Nights, in Wulversford, Witham.

Mr Uddin, who will work at the restaurant as head chef, said: “I have 25 years’ experience as a chef and I have been running my own business for the last 20 years.

“We are trying to give the cuisine a bit of an update.

“There is quite a few Indians in the town centre and quite a few Indian restaurants in Braintree.

“There is stuff we are offering that is not currently on offer in Braintree.

“We will be offering an Indian Kati roll which nobody else is doing.”

A Kati roll is a form of authentic Indian street food, similar to wrap, but using chapatti bread and traditional spiced fillings.

The takeaway will be run by Mr Uddin’s son Mo and will bring five jobs to the high street.

Mr Uddin said: “With my son running the business so it is a real family run place.

“We closed for refurbishment and everything is now nice and new.

“As I have been in the business a long time I know how to make it work.

“We are looking forward to serving the people of Braintree.”

Bengal Spice was initially opened in 1997 by Mr Uddin but has been closed for several weeks.

Delivery and collection are both offered at the restaurant between 5pm and 11pm today.
