A BRAINTREE cadet says it is the “greatest honour” after he picked up a top award from a defence college.

Jake Finesilver, 18, was awarded the Welbeck Sword at Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College’s annual general inspection.

The former Notley High School pupil was selected for the prize for his outstanding personal development.

He is the fifth ever recipient of the award which was donated by Robert Pooley.

Jake, who was also the vice head of college, said: “It is the greatest honour of my life so far.

“It has been a privilege to serve the Welbeck Community during my time at the college.”

He is a former Maldon Army cadet and was a member of the Essex Army Cadet Corps of Drums.

Jake now plans to study civil engineering at Northumbria University as part of the defence technical officer and engineer entry scheme.

Following his degree he will start his initial officer training at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to become an officer with the Royal Engineers.

Parents Gary and Holly Finesilver, said: “We are extremely proud of Jake – his many achievements, his level of commitment, drive, determination, dedication, compassion and work ethic.

“He has been given many challenges and opportunities to excel, with the guidance and support from staff and fellow students.”
