A PERMANENT memorial should be established to honour the police officer killed in the Westminster terror attack, a Conservative MP has said.

James Cleverly, MP for Braintree, who served alongside Pc Keith Palmer in the army, took up calls for a monument to honour the unarmed officer, who was stabbed to death while guarding Parliament during the Westminster terror attack in March.

Pc Palmer was awarded a posthumous bravery medal by the Queen for tackling attacker Khalid Masood when he rushed through the gates after mowing down pedestrians on Westminster Bridge.

Mr Cleverly, speaking during the business statement in the Commons, said: "Will the Leader of the House meet with me and any other colleague who so wishes to discuss the erection of a permanent memorial to Pc Keith Palmer, who fell defending us and our visitors prior to the General Election, and perhaps take as its inspiration from the memorial in St James's Square, which was erected to Pc Yvonne Fletcher."

A memorial marker was erected in St James's Square, in London, to Pc Yvonne Fletcher, who was shot dead while policing a demo outside the Libyan embassy in 1984.

Commons Leader Andrea Leadsom replied: "You remind us of the tragic murder of Keith Palmer and ... you are also right to say that we need to consider how we can remember him and his own sacrifice and I will certainly take that up with Mr Speaker."

Pc Palmer received a posthumous award in the Queen’s birthday honours.
