THE community of Braintree is set to come together once again as the town’s carnival returns for the 54th year.

Its programme is packed full of the usual delights for all ages, with this year’s theme being I Love London.

Martin Green, chairman of the organising committee, said: “It is quite hard to think of a different theme every year that has not been used and we are always looking for something a bit different.

“London means different things to different organisations.

“Hopefully we might get theatre clubs doing West End floats and football clubs doing something to do with Wembley.”

Of course these organisations can express their creativity through the traditional procession, assembly for which begins in Lakes Road from 1pm.

Judging of the floats takes place at around 2pm before the procession leaves for the arena, in Meadowside Park, at 2.30pm.

The variety on offer in the carnival arena is even bigger this year and the fun begins at 2.30pm, before the procession arrives at around 3.30pm.

There are rides for kids of all ages including dodgems, a big wheel and the ever popular Walters.

Live performances range Punch and Judy shows to live music and dance groups.

Mr Green said: “There is all sorts of things going on for all ages. From toddlers to teenagers as well as families.

“It is one of the last remaining community events that happen in Braintree.

“Braintree sometimes gets a bad name and it is lovely to see so many people enjoying themselves in the town.

“We could not do it without the wonderful support of the public.”

Cash Converters, in Braintree High Street, are running a special hook the duck competition where you can win a Nintendo Switch.

The money raised from this year’s carnival will be donated to Farleigh Hospice.

Braintree Carnival takes place on Saturday, June 10, between 1pm and 10pm. Visit www.braintreecarnival.org.uk.
