A SCHOOLBOY is lucky to be alive after being involved in a collision with a car outside his school in Braintree.

Aiden Pritchard was left injured after the accident while crossing the road with his mum, Carrie-Ann, in front of a bus stop outside Beckers Green Primary School, in Beckers Green Road.

Mrs Pritchard, 30, and her husband Warren, 31, have now called for the bus stop to be moved, claiming it obstructs the vision of pedestrians and children at busy times.

She said: “There was a bus at the stop at 8.56am opposite the school, which is a stupid place to put one.

“The bus was parked up and I stepped out to see if there were any cars. He thought because I stepped out he could go.

“Aiden ran to cross the road, which was unusual as he normally looks. He said the car came out of nowhere.”

Aiden, who has learning disabilities, ADHD, possible autism and sensory issues, was rushed to hospital with air ambulance doctors in a land ambulance.

He has been in Broomfield Hospital ever since the accident and had surgery on Wednesday morning to have metal rods put into his femur.

Braintree and Witham Times:

Aiden was given morphine to help with the pain.

Mrs Pritchard said: “He’s doing quite well now. They gave him ketamine at the scene and I believed they numbed him from the waist down too. They took him straight to resus and there were about 10 nurses waiting for him.”

The number 30 route, covered by Stephensons of Essex, runs from the bus stop that serves Templar Road to Tesco at Marks Farm.

Mrs Pritchard, who has three other children - Kelsey-Jayne, 10, Dylan, nine, and Bethany, five, says because of the bus stop no-one was at fault.

She added: “In my whole ten years of having children none of them have been admitted to hospital overnight, they’ve never had a broken bone.

“There was no way it could have been prevented. That road was always very dangerous, the bus stop should not be there.”

Headteacher Claire Smyth said: “First aiders from the school were on scene immediately and emergency services responded quickly, including the air ambulance.

“We are in touch with the family and will obviously offer any support they may require.”

Police have confirmed the crash involved a red Renault Megane.

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “We’d like to send our best wishes to the child for his speedy recovery. Accidents like this happen from time to time and remind all of us of your responsibilities to stay safe when travelling.

"We do not believe that there are any issues with the bus stop but we would be happy to talk to the family or parents of the injured child if they have any concerns they want to raise.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident should contact Braintree Local Policing Team on 101. No arrests have been made.
