ANGRY motorists have called for police to crack down on commuters who left their cars parked blocking a Witham street.

Residents on Walnut Drive fear emergency services could be stopped from reaching accidents after cars were left obstructing the road.

On Wednesday morning drivers struggled to squeeze through a small gap left by commuters who parked opposite each other.

A worker who picks up children in a bus and takes them to school said she could not get through.

The worker, who does not wish to be named, said: “We squeeze through most days but there was no chance, and it confuses the children.

“They are used to a set routine, so me turning up through the garages on foot confused them a bit.”

She said she needed to pick up a child from the bottom of Walnut Drive, so she had to go to the end of Cyprus Road and walk through the garages to collect him. Residents said police were called to tow away one of the cars which had parked next to a car on the opposite side of the road.

She said: “It’s always tight but not as bad as it was that morning.

“It’s the commuters who don’t want to pay parking fees who park there most of the time.”

Some residents could not get out of their road, and called for parking restrictions to be introduced at the busiest times.

A resident of nearby Homefield Road said she was lucky and had parking bays behind her house.

She said: “It’s like it every day, coming up to the end of Homefield Road onto Walnut Drive is really bad, especially when you are trying to turn left around double parked cars.”

Police were contacted but no one was available for comment
