A PRIMARY school is bidding to win a cash boost from the 5p carrier bag charge at a supermarket.

Rivenhall Church of England Primary School is one group on the shortlist for Tesco's Bags of Help Initiative in our region.

The supermarket chain has team up with Groundwork to launch the scheme and the primary school is in with a chance of winning a grant of either £4,000, £2,000 or £1,000, which it hopes to use to rejuvenate the school garden.

Plans include adding wildlife habitats and an outdoor classroom to help children engage with the natural world.

The school has managed to secure a grant from Greggs for £2,500 to go towards the project.

Voting is open in stores throughout May and June and customers will be given a token at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Graham Duxbury, Groundwork’s national chief executive, said: “We’ve been thrilled to see the diversity of projects that have applied for funding, ranging from outdoor classrooms, sports facilities, community gardens, play areas and everything in between.

“We’re looking forward to learning the results of the customer vote and then supporting each group to bring their project to life.”
