TRIBUTES have been paid to a founder of Braintree Bowmen, who died following a fall.

Owen Hull, of Notley Road in Braintree, died whilst in hospital on February 27- he was 94.

The archery club founder had suffered a fall at home just days earlier.

His nephew, Peter Hull, and Peter's brother Chris, both visited him regularly.

Peter Hull, 50, from Great Notley, said: "Owen actually founded the archery club back in the early 50s and was the president for many, many years.

"He used to shoot in various competitions all over the country."

Owen grew up in Great Leighs and when he was 19 he joined the Royal Navy for a few years.

Following this he became a carpenter, and started work at Crittall in Witham until retirement.

He did not have any children, but he had a brother, Ivan, who is 92 and lives in Bocking.

His nephew Peter added: "Owen was also a member at the Braintree Royal Naval Association for many years until the club closed about15 years ago.

"In Owen's spare time, during his long retirement, he used to do wood turning- making things from various types of wood."

The archery club has since been described by Arran Coggan, national club development co-ordinator, as being in 'a great position to be a beacon for archery'.

Owen told the tale of how the club started on its website.

He had said: "The club has produced some fine archers who have represented us well in local competitions.

"It has also produced a number of archers who have shot at county level.

"Braintree Bowmen has lasted over 50 years on the strength of its members and its committee."

Owen's funeral is to be held at the Three Counties Crematorium in High Garrett on Tuesday, April 4.

It will start at 11am and anyone who knew Owen is welcome.
