A GROUP set up to promote architecture in Witham is updating its Town Trail.

The existing Town Trail, identifying significant buildings in the town, was funded by Awards for All in 2002.

The project, set up by the Witham and Countryside Society, has now been turned into an online system, accessed through a mobile phone app.

The new trail was launched by Witham mayor, Patrick Horner, the Town Hall in Newland Street on March 21.

John Palombi, society chairman, said: "The Town Trail consists of 12 buildings, each with a card viewable from the street containing a Quick Response

code.

"By utilising a freely downloadable app on a smart phone the code can be scanned and then a history of the building will be found, together with a history of Witham and a link to the owner's own website.

"The project is intended to increase the footfall in Witham thereby promoting the town, its history and businesses, and later also the open spaces and amenities of the town.

"We hope to extend the Town Trail to many more buildings, leisure facilities and open spaces in the future."

The society hopes to translate the programme into other languages, and design it as a school pack for teachers.
