PRIMARY school pupils got the chance to perform on stage at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Last Monday, pupils at Notley Green Primary School started their new term’s topic of A Mid- summer Night’s Dream with a visit to the iconic London theatre.

The day included a workshop with one of the Globe’s actors, a tour of the theatre, including the opportunity to go backstage and stand on the stage itself, and then a visit to the exhibition to learn all about the history of the venue and its recent reconstruction.

Head of school Claire Russell said: “At the Globe, the older children were fascinated by the history of the theatre and the challenge of performing to an audience sitting almost all the way around the stage.

“The children particularly relished the opportunity to perform a line from the play on the stage and I hope one day they will look back in amazement they had the chance to do this whilst still at primary school.

“Their workshops with the actors again gave the students a chance to look at some of the characters from the play in depth and learn how to portray them based on their actions and lines from the text.

“This went beyond the usual drama sessions held in school and will be useful for when the children do their own A Midsummer Night’s Dream performance at the end of the term.”

The younger children stayed at school and had a visit from a Globe storyteller who introduced the characters from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and gave a simplified retelling of the play through drama and storytelling.
