AN 86-year-old was rushed to hospital in a serious condition after being hit by a car in Witham’s Tesco car park.

The man had been at The Grove Centre supermarket in Witham, right, when a collision happened with a Citroen Berlingo last Wednesday.

Tesco staff were seen looking after the man until the ambulance arrived.

Mia Tribe, from Witham, was shopping at the supermarket when she saw the aftermath.

She said: “It was at the entrance to the car park itself, we heard a commotion and then went to have a look.

“The man was on the road next to kerb.

“Then Tesco staff were with the gentleman and traffic was diverted through the one-way system, rather than trying to drive around the injured man.

“The first member of staff I recall attending to the man was a lady who was clearing up the litter by the cash machines.

“I didn’t actually see him get hit by the car, but I saw him lying on the ground afterwards.”

A spokesman for Essex Police said officers were called with reports of a collision involving a man and a white Citroen Berlingo in the Tesco car park, between 11.10am and 11.30am.

The ambulance service arrived at the scene within 10 minutes.

A spokesman said: “We sent an ambulance crew who treated the man, who was conscious and breathing.

“He was treated for a hip injury and was taken to Broomfield Hospital for further treatment.”

Police said the man, from Chelmsford, was then transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, and remains there in a serious condition.

The driver is helping police with their inquiries. Staff at Tesco confirmed there was a member of staff who helped at the scene.
