Braintree Town have confirmed that Jamie Day has left the club.

In a statement released on Sunday lunchtime, the club said they had parted company with the first-team boss by "mutual agreement" following their 1-0 defeat by Forest Green Rovers the day before.

Day had taken charge of 12 first-team games at the start of the Vanarama National League season and overseen two wins and three draws, but their seven defeats have left them in the relegation zone and chairman Lee Harding said the club's board felt a change at the top was needed.

The former Welling and Ebbsfleet boss took over at the start of the summer in difficult circumstances following the departure of Danny Cowley to Lincoln City at the end of last season.

The majority of the first-team squad that had secured third place in the league last year had also left, leaving just three regular members of the squad - Chez Isaac, Simeon Akinola and Michael Cheek - in place for the start of the current campaign.

So Day had to undertake the task of rebuilding a squad and get them gelling during a pre-season that was also hampered by the Iron's home pitch not allowing any summer games there as it recovered from drainage work that had been carried out.

Harding said he appreciated the size of the job that Day had in front of him when he took over and how hard the manager had worked to make them a competitive force.

However, results and the club's current position meant the board felt a change was required when they met in the aftermath of the defeat by Forest Green - the third home defeat on the trot.

Harding said: "It's a real shame for both the club and Jamie, because he's given the job everything he can.

"Over the past few months we've spoken almost daily and I know how hard Jamie has worked to bring in players to make us competitive.

"But we're all in the results business and the league table does not lie.

"The view of the board was that change now allows sufficient time for fresh ideas and a fresh approach to turn our season around.

"We intend to move quickly and hope to have a new manager in place as soon as possible."
