AN ANNUAL puppet festival took Witham by storm as thousands gathered to watch more than 60 live acts.

The International Puppet festival, organised by Witham Town Council, celebrated its 17th year last weekend with a magic and mystery themed event.

With 25 performances, including infamous robot Titan, crowds swarmed the town centre as Newland Street closed for the day to allow performers and crowds to gather.

Witham Town Council leader Michael Lager said: “It was a chilly day and I think quite a few people might have stayed at home but a great day was had by all, there were lots of children walking around.

“One of our own councillors, Thomas Pleasance, was adorned in a black witch’s cape and was walking around. There were more street performers there than puppets.

“I’m beginning to wonder if we need to take a look at the festival and move a little bit with the times.”
