A CYCLIST was rushed to hospital after a crash on a Witham road just weeks after another rider was injured at the same spot.

The male cyclist was involved in a collision with a car at the mini roundabout near Mill Lane, Bridge Street and Newland Street, at 6.45am yesterday morning.

He was taken to Broomfield Hospital for treatment after sustaining leg injuries.

This incident came less than a month after a teenage girl was involved in an accident at the same place on August 12 and also taken to hospital.

But Pete Fox, who has run Witham Cycling Campaign since 2004, does not believe there is a major issue with safety for cyclists at the junction.

He said: “It’s a perfectly normal road; there is always going to be conflict between cyclists and cars.

“It’s not something I would say is a bad roundabout or a difficult junction.

“At the time these happened it’s getting light, but we don’t know if they had lights on or if the road was slippery. Without having a forensic look at it and finding the cause I wouldn’t be able to say.

“The message is always there are lots of people that use their bicycles to get to work and people do need to be watching out for them.”

District councillor Sue Wilson said she would investigate the matter.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “We received a call at 6.46am to a report of a collision involving a bike and a car at the junction of Newland Street and Bridge Street.

“We sent a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance crew.

“A man, thought to be in his 30s, was treated for minor injuries and lower leg pain.

“He was taken to Broomfield Hospital via ambulance for further treatment.”

Essex Police confirmed officers had attended the incident after reports of a road traffic collision involving a cyclist and a car.
