A NEW exhibition is flying in to Braintree from a galaxy far far away.

Sci-Fi at the Movies opens at Braintree District Museum, Manor Street, on Saturday.

The exhibition will include original and licensed film artefacts from movies like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Spiderman, Star Trek and Superman.

Some of the props are originals, including a lightsaber from Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back and a costume from Star Trek worn and signed by William Shatner.

All the pieces are from the collection of the aptly named Luke Skywalker, from Swindon, who has brought some of the most treasured and valuable items.

Each week until the end of August will take a different theme, with Star Wars, monsters and aliens, Harry Potter, superheroes and robots and rockets taking place throughout the summer holidays.

Luke Skywalker said: “When I was 13 I went to see Star Wars at the cinema. As soon as I came out of I went a bought a couple of figures – then I collected the whole set.

“When I started earning some money I bought my first Stormtrooper suit.

“I realised I wanted more and more costumes.”

Over 30 years, Mr Skywalker has collected rare pieces including his namesake’ s X-Wing fighter helmet worn in the film and signed by all of the cast.

Mr Skywalker said: “There is something for everybody here, kids and older people. There is something about Star Wars, once it is in you it is in your for good.”

Claire Willetts, collections manager at the museum, said “This exhibition will be a fantastic opportunity to see many film props and original artefacts accumulated by a private collector from some of the most well-known science fiction films produced in recent years – it is a must see for any sci-fi fan.”

There is a special opening launch event planned for July 26 where cast members from Star Wars and Harry Potter will be attending.
