A WATERLOGGED road has caused a consistent battle between residents and the council.

St Andrews Road in Hatfield Peverel has been prone to flooding for the past 20 years.

Residents have been to Essex Highways and MP Priti Patel about getting the water cleared.

The council has been out to clear the drains previously, but it did not fix the problem.

It had turned out a blocked gully was contributing to the flooding when Essex Highways investigated on Friday.

An Essex Highways spokesperson said: "There are also issues with drainage ditching on nearby land which we are working to resolve with the relevant landowner.”

Braintree and Witham Times:

Lorna Hood, who lives in the road, said: "This is an ongoing battle with the highways department, I personally have reported it on several occasions.

"There is also a petition with 44 signatures from residents down this end of the road, and sent we photos, but they haven't bothered to reply.

"It gets like a river, we are sick of it.

"People in wheelchairs and mobility scooters don't stand a chance."

Sheila and Richard Ladkin moved in just over three years ago. Richard is disabled and has had to wade through the puddles.

Mrs Ladkin said: "We didn't have a driveway back then so it was really bad, my husband is disabled but we both had to paddle through and it has got worse and worse.

"With the weather last week it was just ridiculous.

"The road is breaking up and there are elderly people who aren't getting out as it's too dangerous."

Nicky Klink, another resident, said it was damaging her car.

She said: "There was an ambulance trying to get down here and they must also have a terrible job, it happens every time it rains and it's awful.

"We aren't having any joy- my car is about 12 years old and because I've had to drive through puddles, my handbrake has rusted."
