THE SITE of a former American Style Diner could soon be reopening under new management.

An application has been submitted to Braintree District Council's licensing department for the vacant 8 Ball Diner at the services off the A12 at Rivenhall.

Mr M Mascar has requested to be allowed to sell alcohol and to provide regulated entertainment at the venue seven days a week between 7am and 11pm.

The application has also been submitted for the provision of regulated entertainment and performance of live music.

The site, located at London Road, Rivenhall End, Witham used to be a popular American style restaurant and car enthusiast meet up spot.

8 Ball Diner was closed due to controversial problems with bailiffs in July 2012.

Duncan Lang, who was manager at the property at the time it closed, said: "The council were sending bailiffs round chasing for huge debts that were from an old tenant.

"I explained to them that it had only been set up a couple of months ago so it could not be us.

"The bailiffs insisted on taking our property and by the time we had got everything back we could not afford to keep running the diner."

The 8 Ball was popular with both car enthusiasts, rock music fans and diners before it closed in unfortunate circumstances nearly four years ago.

Brett Hawksley, a manager of The 8 Ball Diner when it first opened, said: "It was a hub of activity, the car park was rammed and it was a shame that it had to close."

Mr Lang said: "It was really huge, for kids who are into their cars there is nowhere for them to go and nothing for them to do.

"It was good fun and had a great atmosphere - I am glad to see it it opening again."

It is believed that the diner will be re-opening under the name of The Empire Diner in early June.

Braintree District Council did not want to comment at this time.
