ABOUT 160 homes could be built in a village which feared developments of more than 350 houses.

Three sites have been recommended for housing development in Silver End, and Braintree Council is satisfied 160 homes is enough to meet demand.

The houses could be built at the former Crittall Windows factory site, land to the west of Boars Tye Road and the old car park in Sheepcotes Lane.

A 16 hectare site which Gladman Developments wanted to built 350 homes on was not recommended for approval.

The plans have attracted 170 objection comments from residents, who feared the village would not be able to cope with the new homes.

Planning officers said planning policy suggested the site is an unsustainable and unwarranted encroachment into open countryside.

Residents and councillors in Silver End have been pushing for residential development on the old Crittall site, as it was renowned for attracting travellers.

Councillor James Abbott had said it was a wasted opportunity if housing was not considered there.

Silver End Parish Council said it wanted no further development beyond the village enveloper but were in full support of brownfield sites being developed.

Planning officers said: "Development could have a positive effect upon the appearance of the site.

"Redevelopment continues to be strongly encouraged and the council continues to do everything it can to work with the landowner and bring this site forward."

Outline planning permission is already in place for land to the west of Boars Tye Road.

The site was put forward for 60 homes by Cemex properties.

All sites will be discussed at a Local Plan Committee meeting on Wednesday, May 25.
