An airline which flies out of Stansted Airport has cancelled all flights to an Egyptian holiday resort following a terror attack in October.

All Easyjet flights to Sharm-El-Sheikh have been cancelled until January 6, after a suspected terror attack on a Russian plane from Sharm-El-Sheikh airport on October 31.

Passengers on affected flights are being advised to switch to another destination or they can request a full refund or a flight voucher.

A spokesman for Easyjet said: "You will be aware that over the last few weeks, there have been significant issues associated with flying to and from Sharm el Sheikh.

"To help provide some certainty for our customers’ travel arrangements over the Christmas period, we can now confirm we will be cancelling all flights to and from Sharm el Sheikh until January 6."

On its website, it said: "We are sorry for the inconvenience this will obviously cause, but we hope that being clear with all our customers at this point helps you to manage your plans with more certainty.

"The situation is beyond our control and passenger safety will always be our number one priority."

A spokesman for the Department for Transport said: "The security of the travelling public is Government’s highest priority and it will do all that is necessary to ensure that measures in place are proportionate and necessary.

"The UK Government keeps aviation security under continual review in conjunction with the aviation industry and international partners.

"Maintaining safety and security is in all our interests and the Government announced this morning its intention to increase efforts to counter terror threats and provide a step change in its approach to aviation security.

"The Government is committed to ensuring we have robust and consistent standards of aviation security in every airport in the world and the UK will at least double its spending on aviation security this Parliament to ensure we can help tighten security worldwide."
