UP to 4,000 homes were left without water on Sunday night and this afternoon after water pump failures.
Anglian Water said the first pump failure, at a station in the Braintree area, lasted for about about 40 minutes.
An Anglian Water spokesman said: “We’re sorry customers in the Great Notley and Braintree areas were without water on Sunday evening and this afternoon.
“This is because of an electrical fault affecting the pumps at our water treatment works.
“The pumps are now back up and running but it will take time for the network to refill and get back up to normal pressure.
“We know how inconvenient it is to be without water, and we are sorry for the disruption.
“The water may appear cloudy or discoloured, but if customers run their tap for a short while this should clear.
“If households are still having problems, please contact us on 03457 145 145 or via Facebook or Twitter.”
