A SUPERMARKET has been granted a 24-hour licence to sell alcohol.

Tesco, in Great Notley, can now sell beer, wine and spirits around the clock after permission was granted by Braintree Council on Thursday.

Great Notley Parish Council had lodged the only objection, on the grounds of anti-social behaviour, but it was overruled by councillors.

In it’s decision, Braintree Council said shops should be “free to provide sales of alcohol” unless there are good reasons.

The store is already open for 24 hours a day.

It said: “The council is unable to determine an application on the grounds of anxiety and the fear of what may happen.”

It added: “Reference was made to a complaint in respect of the premises, namely the use of the car park to the rear of the premises which falls outside the premises licence application.

“It is noted that the representations were concerned with activities within the rear car park.

“However, no evidence has been presented which demonstrates that these relate to a licensable activity.”

Council officers noted that Essex Police had been consulted on the plan and raised no concerns.

A Tesco spokesman said: “The application was in response to requests from customers who would welcome greater flexibility when they’re shopping with us.

“We’re pleased the application was approved by the licensing committee.”

The spokesman could not say when the store will start to use its new licence.

Anyone with an objection has 21 days to appeal the decision.
