New long-haul flights to North America will be launched from Stansted next summer after the airport bought a new state-of-the-art aircraft.

Thomson Airways’ Boeing 787 Dreamliner touched down at the airport last week straight from the factory as part of a new programme to deliver 13,000 passengers to Cancun in Mexico and Orlando, Florida.

The destinations, which will be provided by Thomson and First Choice from 2016 and are currently on sale, are a first for the airport.

Andrew Harrison, managing director at Stansted Airport, said: “This new long-haul programme by Thomson and First Choice is an extremely exciting development for the airport and the millions of people living in our catchment area, giving them convenient access to long-haul connections on-board the 787 Dreamliner direct from their local airport."
