A couple drawn together by the silver screen have celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary.

Jim and Bessie Hurley, who both live at Braintree Nursing Home in Coggeshall Road, marked 70 years of marriage on Tuesday.

The pair first met at a cinema where they watched The Song of Freedom starring Paul Robeson in 1937, when King George VI was on the throne and Neville Chamberlain was Prime Minister.

It was love at first sight according to Jim and after hitting it off, they were married eight years later at St James’ Church in Enfield, North London, when Jim was 21 and Bessie was 18.
