An expansion to Witham’s Asda will create 10 new jobs for residents in the town.

The store, which has been based in Highfields Road for four years, will undergo a transformation from mid-July and will be completed by the end of August.

The renovations, which include a new George clothing section for children, hope to attract shoppers following the Morrisons M local store opening at the former Jack and Jenny pub in nearby Hatfield Road.

It is also hoped that the work will mean shoppers will continue coming to Asda when the new Aldi supermarket is built on the corner of Gerswin Boulevard and Hatfield Road this year.

Asda store manager Dave Smith said: “Since Morrisons has opened round the corner, it has impacted on our business because the flow of people from that estate used to come here.

“With Aldi opening later in the year, that will have an impact on us too as Aldi is our main competitor in terms of price.

“Asda has reacted to that business and is going to give more of what the customer wants to keep people shopping here.”
