Two burglars who were caught in a stolen Audi A8 just days after moving to England have been jailed for 21 months each.

Lithuanian Valerij Salkovskij, 23, and Almantas Glinskas, 26, were snared on the A12 at Brentwood after stealing the car from a house in Barwell Way, Witham.

The pair were caught with a bag containing a screwdriver, mini torches and the barrel and pin of a door lock.

The judge said the pair, who admitted burglary, could face deportation after serving their sentence.

Salkovskij and Glinskas broke into Robert Heslop’s house through the patio doors at 2.30am on February 12 while he and his two daughters slept upstairs, Chelmsford Crown Court heard on March 5.

Judge Christopher Ball QC said: "You broke into a house where a family was sleeping and stole their car and headed off back to London.

"The sentence I will give you will allow you to be released when you have served half and I have every expectation you will be deported after that.

"I very much hope that is the case - go and burgle somewhere else."

Daiva Dikiene, translating for the pair, said on behalf of them both: "We regret behaving in that way - we weren’t aware the person was in the house."
