A husband and wife who run an amber jewellery business have been fined for selling hazardous children’s teething bracelets.

Simon and Marie Clarke, who run Love Amber from Haygreen Road in Witham, appeared at Colchester Magistrates Court yesterday and admitted two charges of breaching the General Product Safety Regulations.

The regulations state that no producer should sell a product unless it is safe.

The couple admitted supplying a 14cm cherry black amber combined anklet and bracelet and an 11cm honey amber combined anklet and bracelet, which were found to be dangerous to children.

Essex Trading Standards found that the jewellery was too dainty and could have created a choking, inhalation or ingestion risk to children aged under 36 months.

They were each fined £500 and ordered to pay £2,198 costs and a £50 victim surcharge.

Councillor Roger Walters, Essex County Council’s lead for Trading Standards said: “This jewellery was little and contains parts which were too small to give to a baby or toddler.

“Essex Trading Standards remains vigilant against traders who deliberately flout regulations which exist to protect the safety of children.”
