A retired architect believes plans to build a new splash park in Witham could lead to resurrecting outdoor public tennis courts.

Retail consultants GVA have suggested expanding Witham town park, which is hidden between Maldon Road and Newland Street, to include space for attractions such as a splash park, adventure playground, a café or keep-fit trail.

Roy Belsham, former chairman of Witham Hockey Club and Witham Sports Association, said the proposals could go hand-in-hand with building new tennis courts at the site of a disused paddock in the park.

During his time at the club in the 60s and 70s, Mr Belsham, of Luard Way, saw the tennis courts in the recreation ground renovated into hockey and cricket pitches.

He said: “Because of the expansion of the sports clubs in Witham, we took the tennis courts off and we hoped that one day we would be able to replace them.

“I have always thought the tennis courts should be near a play area so adults can have somewhere to go while the children play."
