Police are appealing for witnesses after a man had to be cut free from the wreckage of a two-car crash.

A red Renault Clio and a white BMW are believed to have collided with a red Series 3 BMW in Glebe Avenue, Braintree, at around 3.30pm on January 26.

Firefighters worked for an hour to remove the roof of one of the cars to rescue a man, who suffered serious neck and back injuries.

The driver of the red BMW failed to stop at the scene and was seen driving off in the direction of Bailey Bridge Road, despite the car being extensively damaged.

The car was later abandoned near to Boleyns Avenue.

The injured man was rushed to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford for further care and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A female patient was also treated at the scene for neck pain.
