Bosses at a failing Braintree secondary school have backed down on plans to change its name to improve its fortunes.

Last week The Times exclusively reported that Tabor Academy, in Panfield Lane, was rated “inadequate” by Ofsted inspectors in the quality of teaching, leadership and management and pupils’ achievement after they found frequent teacher changes “confused and frustrated” learners.

The schools watchdog placed it in special measures.

Following the report, executive principal Matthew Slater and Trevor Averre-Beeson, chief executive officer of the Lilac Sky Academy Trust, wrote to parents asking for suggestions for a new name for the academy.

However, due to a backlash from concerned parents, they have dropped the idea.

Mr Averre-Beeson said: “We have suspended the idea of changing the name for the time being.

“As I explained to parents at the meetings that we had, it was a small thought amongst 100 things and it has clearly created quite a lot of response.

“We listened to what people had to say and we have said clearly and publicly that we are not going ahead with it.”
