Police and ambulance crews were at the scene of a four-vehicle accident near Galleys Corner roundabout in Braintree.
The Highways Agency described the crash as "serious".
The ambulance service sent a rapid response vehicle to the scene within four minutes after a call was received at 10.49am today.
An ambulance was at the scene dealing with nine patients with what has been described as minor injuries.
The A120 has since been reopened, according to the Essex Traffic Control Centre, but motorists are warned to expect delays.
