A green Peugeot 206 and a black Jaguar X-type were in collision at the junction of Main Road and Jubilee Avenue at about 2.30pm today.
The driver of the Peugeot, a 60-year-old man from the Chelmsford area, was taken to the Royal London Hospital by ambulance.
Main Road is currently closed from its junction with White Meads to the hospital roundabout.
Police say the closure is likely to be in place for at least another two hours.
