A couple are concerned expanding the A12 could bring it even closer to their home.
The Government announced last week a third lane will be added to the stretch between Chelmsford and Colchester.
Sheila and John Scarff, of Ashby Road, Witham, can already see the A12 from their back garden.
Mrs Scarff said: "We have been here 34 years so right from when the homes were first built we have heard the noise and seen the traffic increase and for people like us, this is the last thing we need.
"It's horrendous at the moment but also in the summer because we can't sleep with our windows open.
"Once we go up to three lanes it's going to be even worse."
