New investment into the main railway line through the east of England could pave the way for a new rail link in between Braintree and Witham, it has been claimed.

Announced as part of Chancellor George Osborne’s autumn statement, the Government has pledged to spend £170million on track and signalling upgrades and Braintree and Witham MPs believe it could lead to the Cressing loop being built.

The loop, an additional track at either Cressing or a neighbouring train station which would allow trains to pass each other, would double the number of services to and from Liverpool Street.

Rail report ‘Once in a Generation – A Rail Prospectus for East Anglia’, which was originally published in July 2012 and included the proposal, is being relaunched this year as the contract for train company Abellio Greater Anglia is set to expire in 2016.

The improvements to the Braintree line will be down to the new company who will take over the Greater Anglia franchise.
