A family are holding a charity fundraiser for a support group that helped them through the tragic death of their son.

Michelle and Tom Cochrane of Stafford Crescent, Braintree, lost their seven-month-old son Zac to spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in July - a genetic disease which causes severe muscle weakness.

They hope to raise awareness of the devastating condition and make £1,000 for SMA Support UK, who offer information, home visits and toy packs for those living with SMA.

Local businesses have donated various prizes for the event, which will take place all day in George Yard, Braintree from 9am.

Mrs Cochrane said: "We are very grateful to all the businesses that have so kindly donated prizes to the cause.

"We hope to raise £1,000 for SMA Support UK in memory of my late son Zac who sadly lost his life to this cruel genetic disorder.

"We also hope to raise awareness of spinal muscular atrophy, as it is sadly not routinely tested for in the UK."
