Police arrested two people and fined more than 60 during a major traffic operation in Braintree.

Roadside checks were set up in Rayne Road and near Galleys Corner roundabout during Operation Nash on October 14.

One vehicle failed to stop and police gave chase, later finding it abandoned in Braintree.

Police arrested a 31-year old man from Braintree and a 24-year-old man from Witham who were both charged with stealing the car from Halstead.

Both men will appear before Colchester Magistrates’ Court on December 9.

Sgt Graham Freeman of the Essex Police Casualty Reduction Section said: “The aim is to educate drivers and enforce the law to ensure that dangerous, illegal and poorly-driven vehicles are taken off the roads.

“We also aim to ensure road safety by ensuring that drivers wear seat belts and are not distracted by using mobile phones at the wheels.

“The operations are also used to detect and disrupt criminals using our roads.”
