A Braintree police sergeant who was fired for gross misconduct after he failed to turn up for work on 13 occasions could appeal the decision.

The unnamed officer was dismissed without notice at a hearing on Wednesday, October 8.

Mark Smith, chairman of Essex Police Federation, said: “We did not represent the officer involved but he has the right to appeal.”

A panel chaired by Essex Police director of support services Mark Gilmartin found the officer had failed to follow orders or carry out his duties and responsibilities.

Nick Alston, Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex, said: “I note that an officer has been dismissed for gross misconduct.

“As Police and Crime Commissioner, I will continue to support the Chief Constable as he deals firmly but fairly with all issues relating to the integrity of police officers and staff."

The officer could not be reached for comment.
