A Parisian-style town square ideal for outdoor dining, market stalls and pop-up shops could be on the cards for Witham.

The town’s business leaders hope to create a central square at the junction of Guithavon Street and Newland Street in a bid to rejuvenate Witham after recommendations from a retail study commissioned by Braintree Council.

Members of Witham Town Team want to create the new focal point, which could be pedestrianised or allow traffic for deliveries, in order to increase footfall and boost trade.

Chairman Corinne Thompson said: “We want to create a central hub in the town to enable an area which we could call a centre.

“We want to use it as a central space for potential demonstrations and concerts.

“There is room for an artisan market, pop-up cafés and mini shops that new businesses could use - there will be something different happening all the time.

“I have in my mind a place with a Parisian, continental feel with artwork to meet and greet friends.”
