Braintree MP Brooks Newmark took on the ice bucket challenge but chose to donate to three other charities instead of nominating others for the task.

The minister for civil society said so many people had now done the challenge he did not want his nominations to go to waste.

Mr Newmark said: “The important thing is the ice bucket challenge is engaging people in charity and getting them to think about the charitable sector as a whole.

“People are talking about it and giving to charities and highlighting a number of important causes.”

He donated to ALS, the Play and Resource Centre (PARC) in Braintree, Farleigh Hospice and the Get Kids Going! disabled children’s charity.

I`v no idea what the Ice Bucket Challenge is. But it looks all so vulgar- Why can`t people just give - and keep their mouths shut about it - Like it says in the Bible somewhere ?

You are absolutely right cmills.

Your comments are spot on! (Apart from the irrelevant reference to that dubious publication you refer to).

The Ice Bucket Challenge is a current trend on social media primarily to raise awareness of motor neurone disease. Participants are expected to undergo a forfeit in the shape of being drenched in ice water, nominate three others to undergo the same fate and make a small donation to the motor neurone disease association (MNDA).

The ALS referred to in the article is the AMERICAN equivalent of the MNDA.

As the primary reason for the exercise is to raise awareness is publicity for MNDA then Mr Newmark is correct to make a big show of it.
