The head of a Witham Academy has said the school is trying to “address anomalies” in some of their GCSE results released today.

Trenica King at New Rickstones Academy in Conrad Road, Witham, said appeals to exam boards could have “a significant impact” on the number of pupils receiving five or more A* to C grades, including maths and English.

The Academy had 40% of pupils achieve five or more A*-C grades this year but pupils could see a change in “certain results” on appeal.

This number was 9% down on last year, when the school achieved its highest marks in history.

In a press release today, Ms King said she wanted to congratulate the pupils on their hard-earned grades, praising particularly high achievers.

She said: “The New Rickstones Academy would like to congratulate its students on their GCSEs outcomes.

“Notable successes were Georgia Bryan, who attained 12 A* - B grades, together with Hannah Nelson, Josh Faires, Josh Coote and James Gracie.

“Furthermore, the Academy are particularly delighted for Kayleigh Mansfield who, despite significant disabilities, achieved some outstanding outcomes with distinction* in dance, alongside seven other GCSE passes.”

Ms King also hinted that changes to the GCSE system had affected pupils’ results across the country.

“Against a difficult national picture of volatility in outcomes, we are proud of our students’ achievements, which are a result of their hard work and determination, together with the support they received from their parents and staff.”
