Witham's new state-of-the-art leisure centre opened its doors for the first time this week nine years after the idea was first suggested.

Scores of residents visited the Witham Leisure Centre, in Spinks Lane, on its opening day on Tuesday to enjoy the new facilities, including a six-lane 25-metre pool, a learner pool with a moveable floor and a spectator area.

The new leisure centre, which will replace the 40-year-old Bramston Sports Centre in Bridge Street, also features a fitness suite, two squash courts, two dance studios and a steam room.

Last week, the Times reported that the opening was “imminent” although a date had not been set.
