An artist whose grandfather was awarded the Victoria Cross during the First World War is exhibiting his memorabilia and her own war-themed artwork.

Hazel Adlam is holding a display called 1914-2014 An Echo in Time at Gosfield Gallery, in Gosfield Shopping Village, until August 31.

She said: “I will be showing and selling a selection of artwork, crafts and cards with a display of some of my grandfather's memorabilia including replica medals, the compass he used during the Somme and other original photos and artefacts and newspaper articles of the day.

“I will be donating 20 per cent of all sales to the Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes.

“My grandfather was the first chairman of the Sandy branch of the British Legion in 1923 and is a charity close to my heart.

Lt Col Tom Edwin Adlam VC was 22 when he found himself leading an attack on German trenches at Thiepval, France, during the battle of the Somme on September 27, 1916.

Under continuous enemy fire, Lt Col Adlam, of the 7th Bedfordshire Regiment, was told the soldiers should remain under cover until darkness and then retreat.

But he refused and led his platoon on a successful attack.

* The exhibition is open 9.30am-5pm daily. Gosfield Shopping Village is in Peterfield Lane.
