A WOMAN stole £500 from a pensioner while she was distracted at a post office counter.

The victim, in her eighties, left her pension money at the post office in New Street, Braintree, after she became distracted while posting a letter.

Julie McCarthy, 52, of the Twin Oaks caravan site in Stisted, was behind her in the queue and took it.

She admitted theft by finding when she appeared at Colchester Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

A relative has a mobile, van based, business. He agreed to do a job at that address without realising that it was a traveller site. Throughout the time that he was working they were nosing around in the van and asking to borrow things. We know that he lost at least one piece of equipment, that was virtually brand new, and there could have been others.

Angry of Lexden says...

Remember "theft by finding" it's very clever. They stole from my business unit, hid the items nearby. When I call the police, they suggested having a look around nearby. They explained that in the travellers mind it's not stealing! Because they come back later and "fond the goods". I got my stuff back ok, and I left a big sign in its place........
