The number of councillors in the Braintree district would be slashed under new proposals by the Boundary Commission.
The independent body has recommended the number of councillors should be cut from 60 to 49.
Under the plans new ward boundaries would be created to balance the amount of voters per councillor in each area, with the number of wards reduced from 30 to 26.
Council leader Graham Butland said: “The changes will produce significant savings for the tax payer in terms of both reducing the amount spent on councillor’s allowances and the cost of administering elections.
