War veterans are hoping that a budget supermarket chain has lost interest in buying their memorial hall in Witham, which would have forced them to leave.

More than a year after Lidl reportedly approached the Royal British Legion headquarters about buying its Newland Street memorial hall, discussions seem to have dried up.

The German supermarket chain was also believed to be interested in neighbouring premises, including the former tax office Iceni House, in the hopes of redeveloping the site.
