War veterans hope Lidl no longer wants their memorial hall

War veterans are hoping that a budget supermarket chain has lost interest in buying their memorial hall in Witham, which would have forced them to leave.

More than a year after Lidl reportedly approached the Royal British Legion headquarters about buying its Newland Street memorial hall, discussions seem to have dried up.

The German supermarket chain was also believed to be interested in neighbouring premises, including the former tax office Iceni House, in the hopes of redeveloping the site.

Let's put some meat on this story.
1) The RBL hall is one of the ugliest buildings in Witham.
2) When this was in BWT a few months ago, we were told that part of LIDL's proposed deal was to include a new hall for the members to use.
3) Iceni House is currently undergoing a huge, and presumably costly, refurbishment to turn it into luxury flats. It's not going to be knocked down now to build a supermarket.
