A science teacher will swap bunsen burners for Burma when she heads to Myanmar for two years to help train teachers in the southeast Asian country.

Alec Hunter teacher Wendy Jackson has been raising funds for the international development charity Voluntary Service Overseas, which will place her in a local community from August 23.

One of her fundraising events was a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses including Lethal Gaming, Bailey’s Hair Gallery, Beauty Nail Boutique and Bills Tackle.

She said: “Following decades of isolation, skilled volunteers have now been invited to Myanmar to ensure its poorest children get a better education and the opportunity to succeed."
