Villagers fear their quality of life will suffer now proposals which will see hundreds of HGVs transporting gravel from quarries each week have been agreed.

Essex County Council has finalised their replacement minerals local plan, which will see the majority of the county’s gravel extraction concentrated around the Braintree district until 2029.

Four sites in Rivenhall, Rayne, Great Leighs and Little Braxted have all been allocated to excavate sand and gravel.

The plan could see more than 800 HGVs travelling along the A12 and A120 each week.

See this week's Braintree and Witham Times for the full story.

Both the A120 and the A12 are over capacity. The A120 is one of the most dangerous roads in the UK. Everytime our councillors agree to proposals that add traffic to these roads they are agreeing to more deaths and serious injuries as a result.

I really hope they can live with this. I couldn't.

Just to be clear - this was Essex County Councillors who voted this through - and not from this area either. Almost all the local district and county councillors (in Braintree District) opposed this concentration of quarries.

Councillor Abbott, I am well aware of the good work you are doing for the County of Essex, particularly North Essex. But I do feel you are almost the lone voice of reason among a bunch of egotists and narcissists who all seem to be working to their own agendas and not the good of the county and its residents. Your efforts are appreciated. Please keep up the good work.

160 extra daily lorry movements on the A12 and A120 is a small increase, that would barely have any effect.

Surely there must be more of a concern for the four villages which would each have an average of 40 extra lorries on their minor roads and possibly through the village centres?
