Prolific shoplifter "committed a crime against Witham"

First published in News

A prolific shoplifter who stole 3,000 items in a year has been accused of committing “a crime against Witham”.

Mum-of-three Ann-Marie Elvin, 45, has been ordered to keep all of her receipts for the next two years to prove ownership of any items in her possession.

Unemployed Elvin, of Frances Way, Silver End, is known to have stolen about 3,000 items during the course of last year from shops across Witham, as well as a family’s market stall, Chelmsford Crown Court heard.

Witham Chamber of Commerce chairman Joy Vaughan, of Powers Hall End, said: “She’s like a car crash in the whole town.

“It’s a crime against the community because when businesses lose money, it’s the shoppers who have to pay.

She's like a car crash in the whole town? What is that supposed to mean? I love it, what other "Crimes against Witham" can people think of?

* Siphoning off our Council tax to pay for projects in Braintree (see recent article about eyesores).

* Blocking planning permission for the proposed Morrisons extension

* Blocking planning permission for the proposed ALDI on Hatfield Road.

* Causing traffic chaos for three months just to add a turn left filte lane from Hatfield Road to Spa Road, and a very short turn right lan the other way.

* Taking up 15 spaces in Tesco car park for a car wash hardly anyone uses, and letting it carry on after the temporary planning permission ran out.

* delaying the footbridge over the railway for about five years because it had be a bridleway, causing at least one death on the old crossing, despite nobody ever riding a horse there.

* Closing the Karting centre on Freebournes.

* Leaving huge potholes on main roads for ages before fixing (eg on Maldon Road next to Constance Close)

That's all I can think of for now.

What about a novel solution that has her tagged, but instead of the tag being used to monitor a curfew, a detector in each shop in the town alerts the staff to her presence? Dragons Den, here I come.

Such eloquence from "THE" car crash in town (Witham), Bhudeekins (seriously made me LOL with that one)! Fantastic repartee and incisor sharp wit the likes of which will never be seen again, I'm sure.

No. I'm sure about that.

Oscar Wilde -- eat yer heart out mate. We've met your match. Even surpasses the skills of our very own OMPITA I fear

On a serious note, this (hardly unattractive) person has something recognised worldwide and categorised as an impulse control disorder, sub-categorised as kleptomania and with an ICD-9 of 312.32. This is a serious (mental) health issue and I feel saddened that his aspect has not been mentioned either in the article or the comments. Even more so, because this person's face is plastered all over this ignominious POS "newspaper" despite the FACT she has a disability that CAN be treated.

I wonder how one might feel if one had severe Crohn's disease (maybe with appurtenant fistula) that caused innumerable problems -- not least of which might be odouriferous -- and was shamed by this POS plastering one's personal medical and health information in public.

Can anyone smell a lawsuit?

Now that's not a malodourous scent -- but the sweet perfume of fa free and respectful society exercising its rights!
