Two friends have successfully completed a 1,500-mile journey across Europe in a car decorated like a Spitfire.

Kris Bennett, 40, and Nick Lawson, 39, set off from Nick’s house in Purcell Road, Witham at about 3.30pm last Thursday to make their way to the starting point of the Wacky Rally in France - a challenge to make it across Europe in four days in an old banger.

To take part in the rally, the duo’s task was to find a car for just £300 and make it stand out as much as possible.

They opted for a 20-year-old Mazda MX5, which they painted as a Spitfire, complete with propellors, so the pair could dress up as pilots.

See the Braintree and Witham Times, out on Thursday, for the full story.

Why?

Are they deliberately trying to annoy people? WW2 has gone - and moved on - to do this is merely provocation.

So it has totally passed you by that we are marking the 100 years since the first world war began in 1914. The press is full of it.

Why waste your energy squabbling about the whys and wherefores of WW1 & WW2 guys?

If we're not careful we'll all have WW3 demanding our undivided attention before long!

Firstly,
This rally was going through France, Italy, Monaco and Spain so I can't think how it would have been provocative to anybody that saw it.

Secondly, the rally was from July 4th to July 7th and Team "Chocks Away" (that was their official team name in the rally) appeared to have dropped out after just 1 day, only scoring points on the first day. I wonder why they never picked up any points for the other 3 days??

They were classified as finishing 30th out of 56 entrants.

But, all in all, a good attempt at driving a 20 year old car from North France to Barcelona in 4 days via Italy and Monaco.

Well Done

Don't see anything wrong with the old crate - spiffing colours and would have shown Johnny Foreigner just who won the war!

They also raised over £4000 for charity, so not that annoying or provocative, just well intended.
